Case Study

HSBC

The Opportunity

HSBC has partnered with Principle for more than 15 years across multiple business units, navigating a rapidly shifting global landscape. As HSBC evolved its retail, business, and premier banking experiences, the organization saw an opportunity to unify its global branch network, modernize its retail environments, and adopt more sustainable practices, while maintaining brand consistency at scale.

The opportunity extended across several fronts:

  • Creating future‑focused retail experiences for younger, digitally oriented customers

  • Designing globally deployable interior concepts for Retail, Business, and Premier

  • Reducing the carbon footprint of furniture and componentry

  • Ensuring brand consistency across the UK, Europe, and global markets

Principle’s role was to help HSBC take on the future of banking, creatively, sustainably, and operationally.

The Solution

Global Design + Modular Systems

Working alongside the HSBC Global Standards team, we developed interior concepts for Retail, Business, and Premier experiences that could be deployed anywhere in the world. Modular elements allowed re‑fits to be completed in less than a week, reducing disruption and enabling global scalability.

Global Sourcing & Component Supply

Components include:

  • iPad desks

  • Express Banking centers

  • Illuminated graphic stands

  • Modular machine walls

We also design, manufacture, and install interior and exterior signage across the HSBC network in the UK.

Future Retail Vision

To help HSBC engage a younger demographic less inclined to visit branches, a future retail concept was developed and grounded in technology‑enabled journeys, simplifying transactions, and community‑driven dwell spaces.

Sustainable Branch Transformation

Principle partnered with HSBC to design and deliver the bank’s first sustainable and accessible branch, re‑engineered with:

  • Circular, low‑carbon materials

  • Fully redesigned and newly created sustainable components

  • Independent circular design certification verifying 100% reusability and full end‑of‑life recyclability

The Sheffield branch achieved both LEED and WELL certification, becoming the benchmark for HSBC’s global sustainability standards.

Our Impact

Principle’s work has helped HSBC:

  • Deploy consistent design standards across Retail, Business, and Premier banking

  • Implement modular systems

  • Create the bank’s first LEED & WELL certified sustainable branch

  • Reduce carbon footprint across furniture and componentry

  • Modernize the customer experience for a new generation of banking customers

  • Maintain a cohesive brand presence across interior environments and signage

The designs and sustainable solutions developed by Principle are now being incorporated into HSBC’s global design standards and used as the model for the bank’s evolving global estate.
